The only reason I am giving this 2 stars instead of 1 is because my expectations were not set high for a $3 programming book. I did not expect a great deal of content and I knew "programming success in a day" was an unrealistic promise, but what I cannot forgive is confusing and poorly written code in a programming book. I am fluent in other programming languages and was able to mentally "fix" the syntax errors of the examples, but anyone new to coding would find this book very frustrating. To add to the confusion, the author provides extremely poor visual distinction between the text of the book and the code examples; the simple use of different fonts or indenting would have been a huge improvement. Lastly are frequent grammatical and spelling errors. It is very obvious no one proofread this book prior to publishing.

This book really is for beginners however it is not written in a way that would really be helpful to beginners. There was all of this history and general description of PERL as a language (compared to other languages). The beginner would typically care NOTHING about that! What the beginner really needs is a lesson book would helpful points before and after such that each lesson builds on what is learned from the previous lesson. The only way that someone could learn PERL in one day with this book is if one's Dad has been himself a PERL programmer AND the reader's having an IQ of at least 200 to supersede the very poor way in which the writer addresses beginners.

This book is basically just an introduction to what Perl is. You are not going to be able to perform any programming after reading it. It's well written however you can gain as much knowledge by just reading the free on-line Perl manual. Save yourself the time and couple of bucks and skip it.

Complete waste of money. If your idea of success is learning to output a scalar to the screen, then maybe.... Otherwise, do yourself a favor and spend a little to get a real book. This is more of a pamphlet (54 skimpy pages) that is poorly written and leaves a LOT to be desired. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. Horrible.

One Half of the Book, Learn the barebone Basics Structure of Perl. Second Half of the Book, also gives you more reasons why Perl is Great what it dose.

You will not learn much Perl from this book: at best it is an overpriced blurb about what is Perl and why you should use it.

More like what is perl, and how to install it. The programming aspect is limited to differentiating between scalers, arrays, and hashes.

This book will not teach you Perl despite what that 50 or so suspicious reviews say. There is no way a 30 page book can teach you programming regardless of what the reviews say. If you are interested in a introductory Perl book, I'd suggest something like Learning Perl, Beginning Perl, or Modern Perl among others.
