...when people bicker about the lyrics of the song "Baby it's Cold Outside", I prefer the meme from Grandma wondering why no one cares that she was run over by a reindeer. (And it's a fair question). If you want to elude the teeth gnashing endemic in politics or the vapid stupidity of twitter trolls, this book will cure what ails you. I taught history for 25 years and appreciate how different cultures celebrate/handle holidays relative to one another. This book delves into the history of many holidays and how varying countries around the world celebrate them in a very light-hearted manner. You will learn interesting facts and snicker along the way. Especially the first sentence in the New Years Day chapter. And it's true.Thank you to the authors!

I must admit, I am a sucker for odd pieces of funny and well-presented information. Origin stories. Stories about long-forgotten intrigues. Things we take for granted that aren't what we think. If you are at all like this, you will love "Holiday Hilarity", since it fits the bill of these personal peculiarities--plus a whole lot more. Read a lot, or read it in segments, or look up particular holidays--there is no one right way to read this book, but there is a WRONG way--and that is by not buying it. Don't be a grump who is too cheap to make himself laugh!

I read this book in one sitting. It was very fascinating. Mr. Gurian takes all the major holidays that we celebrate and pulls interesting facts about them that we didn't know before and blends his sharp & funny commentary. One example is when he discusses Christmas and reveals that: "Jamestown was the first place that eggnog was consumed for the first time." Gurian then asks "If Jesus was such a peaceful man, why is this holiday so stressful?" In this book you'll also discover that while millions of Americans celebrate the 4th of July, many of our Presidents meet their maker on this day too. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it!

I wanted to make the upcoming Christmas season more meaningful by reading this book, and the results were satisfactory. It's a history book about holidays, but it's also a storybook that you can enjoy. Not a list of boring incidents covered in high school history classes, but the official holiday has made the meaning more vivid from the layperson who can take time off.The sad fact is that holidays were based mainly on religious origins and often on bloodshed. And as one of the ordinary people who enjoyed the holidays thoughtlessly, I realized that the original meaning of honoring the victims and the monumental events somewhat reduced and it was becoming a commercial discoloration. However, it is not a book to awaken such guilt. Anyway, we can remember them because there is this holiday. Their contribution is ultimately for the well-being of human society. So we can enjoy it. Our ancestors made the world a better place to live. So they will be pleased that future generations enjoy the holidays. And the authors treat holiday lovers with funny humor. It's fun to go back and forth between historical events, which are not light topics, and the current state of enjoying such a holiday.

I loved the stories and the facts and the humour. This book was both easy and fun to read, and it provides fascinating insights and entertaining bits of history that shed light on some of the weird things we do when it comes to holidays. I can’t think of a more appropriate book to read as we see Christmas all around us—everywhere we go—and as we head towards Christmas Day itself. And New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day, and Valentine’s Day, and Easter… A thoroughly enjoyable book.

My favorite kind of comedy is that which also teaches, inspires and/or soothes my nerves in these nerve-wracking times. This book does all three, with an added dose of out-loud laughs. My favorite joke in the first chapter?"The chiming of the church bells signaled the start of the New Year. But after 1904 the festivities were moved to the New York Times building furtheruptown. By the way, an even more interesting fact, none of the original parishioners still attend services there. It’s all new people. "And it gets funnier from there. Buy it, read it, laugh and feel better.- Prof. Frank Chindamo

This book could’ve not come at a more better time :) . You will go through different holiday history lessons (or facts) while also enjoying lots of laughs in between. It’s fun, easy to read, relatable but more importantly funny. After your done reading this book you will have a different perspective for the upcoming Christmas and New Years :)

I really really enjoyed this book!!!! I laughed so hard and actually enjoyed learning some facts about the holidays i didn’t know! It’s a easy read... before you know it , it’s over and you find yourself chucking about a story or two later in the day! Seriously what a great gift to give someone, the gift of laughter!!!
