I got this because my son goes to a Montessori daycare and is working on sound work now. This way we can practice at home. With a few modifications, this book would be unbelievable. If the picture that matches the letter was behind a flap that would be great. My son sees the picture and just wanted to say the word instead of the sound of the letter. If the letter was the first thing he saw this would work much better as a sound lesson. So I added my own flaps using card stock. Now it works great. The sandpaper could be a little bit rougher for feel too.

Love this book and so does my son! He attends a montessori preschool so this book supports that method well. The letters are all lower case and presented out of order (so kids aren't just memorizing the abc's). Each one is made with sand paper to support a sensory connection and promote learning. There's also a picture to hint at the sound (although my son thinks the "bus" should actually be "school bus."). And of course, true to the montessori method, the letters are presented as sounds, not things with a name (e.g. B is "buh"). My favorite part is the last page where all the letters are presented (out of order) so we can review and see how many he really knows. When he gets stuck, he turns back to find the picture page for a hint to help him remember. He knows most of the letters now and gets so excited when he finishes the last page without missing many because he's eager to start reading. (By the way, we never approach that last page as a test or anything stressful. Just a fun way to finish off the book.)

Another post said that only some letters are covered. Not true. They are all included just not in alphabetical order. Also, I really like that these are lower case letters. That's hard to find. Almost all books and work material focus on upper case. Nice thick cardboard book. Not too brightly colored or distracting. Very pleased.

Contrary to what other reviews have said — this book *does* contain all 26 letters of the alphabet. They are not, however, in order of the alphabet song. While I don’t have much experience with Montessori, I believe what is trying to be emphasized here is *learning* the sound and how to write the letter — rather than memorizing the name of the letter or a particular order. My only criticism is that the sandpaper is very fine and could stand to be rougher for an enhanced tactile experience.

The only thing I don't like about this book is that the phonetic pronunciation of the letter sounds is not exactly correct, and someone without early literacy experience could go wrong in teaching as a result. For example, the G page says "this is 'guh' as in goat". Children really shouldn't learn to add the "uh" sound to letters like G or D, etc. because it can become confusing when they learn to "sound it out"- duh-o-g and kuh-a-t can be confusing, especially for children who suffer from speech delays. The correct pronunciation is a very short, quick d sound. I suggest if you purchase this book you watch some YouTube videos about how to correctly pronounce letter sounds before diving into teaching the book.

I purchased this book for my son who is almost two to start learning. It is a nice cardboard style book. It has bright colors and the sandpaper type letters to help the child trace and learn. As I am not used to the montessori style of learning I was confused when the book only had certain letters. I was expecting A to Z and that is not the case. I like the book would have preferred it to have the whole alphabet instead of ones that are thought to be the easiest and best to learn first as it is not the method I plan on using with my son. The book is made well and it should last a long time. It is safe for a two year old to handle.

I'm a Montessori teacher and a mom with 1 child in a Montessori school. I got this book when my daughter expressed an interest in letters and overall it's a good book.Pros:-Encourages adult to read the sound instead of the name of the letter-letters are out of order- letters are tactilePossible Improvements:-Better sound examples- lift the flap design so soften don't immediately see the picture and know the sound- I'd order the letters differently but that's probably just my own preference.

I like that the letters are not in order. I would have liked the book to include the whole alphabet or there to be a follow up book with the other letters. The sand paper is not very rough, just slightly. In spite of my objections, my toddlers seem to like it. I would also like to see both upper case and lower case letters. I would say that this book is just OK, nothing spectacular. The overall quality of the book is nice and sturdy.
