I have been searching for the 'perfect' design book for years, and finally found it when I discovered Big Design, Small Budget! Like many others, I would go into bookstores and look at all the design books and magazines searching for inspiration and ideas for my own rental home leaving somewhat disappointed. They had pretty pictures and provided some ideas, but a lot of it was over priced, not explained clearly, and not suitable for a rental.Betsy does an amazing job of providing clear and basic guidelines and ideas for all budgets, styles, rooms, and homes. She encourages you to use colors, but explains how so that for those us that are afraid of color (or creating the rainbow affect) can take the baby step towards incorporating colors with our neutrals. This book is written in a comprehensive way that walks you through the design process from start to finish - starting with determining your budget and style to adding color and accessories. She writes it in a way that is descriptive and logical, but that is witty and entertaining - it feels like you are talking with your best friend (who is a design genius) as opposed to reading a book. You won't be able to put it down and when you finish you will want to read it again!I wrote Betsy with a specific question I had regarding my design and wasn't really expecting a reply (although I was hoping for one), and thought if I did get one it would be from someone on her team. I received a response the next day directly from Betsy which blew me away! She also guided me to her podcasts and Facebook page where she does a Q&A session each week and provides new tips and advice regularly. I feel like I discovered a secret treasure finding her book and online resources! After years of searching and trying to design spaces with intention I feel that I am finally equipped with the tools and knowledge to do it right, thanks Betsy!I have several friends that are getting married next month and I know what I am getting them as a wedding gift - 'Big Design, Small Budget'!

Okay my home is light and airy with white lace curtains....this book says NO white curtains...I have a chair in my bedroom that holds a glass of water and my nightime reading material in lieu of a bulky nightstand but this book says NO chair allowed in the bedroom....this book discourages thinking outside the box when it comes to being creative with your home decor..it is going back. ....

No nonsense decorating served up with laughter! I wish I had found this book about $4,000 earlier! I would have avoided some rather unfortunate mistakes. This is not just another book of pretty pictures of random rooms and furniture, it offers down-to-earth, how-to information that is highly usable presented in a fun way! Betsy Helmuth has nailed it!

I like it, it is a good basic. Having said that, I used several of her points for staging a house my company is selling. One point was: Find an inspiration piece, pull 3 colors from it and use them to decorate. Another point: Having different finishes in each room, shiny, mirror, wood, matte, glass and so on give a luxury effect. I applied those tips with my latest rehab/flip house and everyone went nuts over it and I have had multiple offers to buy it over selling price. The house itself is very well renovated, but the staging with tips from Betsy was the icing on the cake. Thank you Betsy!!!

I purchased Big Design, Small Budget last week and read it cover to cover! It was exactly what I was looking for...straight forward, loads of easy to implement ideas on a budget and written in a quirky fun style :) The tips are useful not only when you crave a stylish space on a budget, but also, when you have the luxury of more to spend. Thank you Betsy for writing the book..I look forward to putting the tips to great use!

This was a really fun read - first design book that I was unable to put down - the best design book I've ever read. I appreciate straightforwardness and conciseness as well as the whys and I know I'll refer to it again although the ideas are very easy to remember. I love the humor!

Very informative and clear, concise instruction to get the end result you want. I would have given it 5 stars except some of the text was presented in highlight color blocks that were so deep in color the text was difficult to read. I wished for lighter background color for these poor aging eyes. But even so it was so well written that I can call it one of my favorites in my library of decorating books. Thanks.

A friend recommended it & while she has a modern, clutter-free solution to working in small spaces/ starter homes, I find that my style conflicts with some of her "rules". That is not to say I didn't learn a few things, but will be passing the book along for friends/ family to read. I'll just keep my notes to myself!
