About the Author

Jurgen Moltmann studied Christian theology in England and, after his return to Germany, in Gottingen. He served as a pastor from 1952 till 1958 in Bremen. From 1967 he was professor of systematic theology at the University of Tubingen until he retired in 1994. The Crucified God is one of Jürgen Moltmann’s earliest and, undoubtedly, most seminal works. In classic Moltmannian fashion, the theology of The Crucified God is done “on the way.” It would be a misnomer to classify this treatise, or any Moltmann’s works, as “systematic” theology. If anything, it is more “constructive.” So, Moltmann constructs “on the way,” and — in his case — on the way from POW camps.Moltmann’s POW experience cannot be overstated in importance and inception for his theology. He found God in the camps, or rather God found him in his own suffering. Since then, Moltmann has been obsessed — possessed? — by Jesus’ cry of dereliction (“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”). What does this mean for christology, theology, anthropology, ecclesiology, and ethics? In short, Jesus, as true God, died; death was taken into God. The cross was God abandoning God, God against God. In other words, God has chosen to be the God for the godforsaken by being godforsakened — the truest and deepest level of solidarity.Moltmann is, in a word, prolific; he is the most productive liberation theology. People of all stripes would do well to read him, particularly theologians who disagree with him. Moltmann's "The Crucified God" is one of the best books I have read in a long time. Moltmann's detailed explanation of God's sense of existential suffering with mankind, in light of of Christ's kenosis, provides an inspiring alternative to a God who is apathetic and aloof to man's suffering and also provides a better understanding of theodicy. What impressed me most about Moltmann's work is helping me understand the depth of God's experience of suffering through the death of Christ, Christ's suffering on the cross and his experience of death in which all of this could only be accomplished through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.This book is NOT a fast read and requires some serious thought and personal reflection regarding one's relationship with Christ and their understanding of soteriology. This book's conceptual work would make an outstanding bible study and would help many members of the class or church grow in their knowledge of the purpose and necessity of the cross of Jesus Christ. This is some good stuff! Don't miss out!!!!

In the millennia, a host of great thinkers have tried to make sense of the crucifixion of Jesus - and we still seek the answers. Moltmann brings his own insights into sharp focus in this book that has stood the test of time, and likely will for decades to come.

I find Moltmann's book inspiring because it helps me understand the depth of God's love for me, personally. The reality of God's humility is expressed in his willingness to experience life as a human being, and the consequences of his choice reveal a love thatnever wavers in that commitment . Holding love in his heart while those he loves are rejecting Him, and forgiving them as he is dying is the most incredible expression of faithfulness - I only fully understand this loving work because I believe He is God in the flesh.It is proof to me that He IS Love! The mystery of suffering is very difficult to resolve, but this book goes a long way toward helping meto realize that it is way more than I can understand in the environment of my mind! I need faith. Moltmann is not easy to ready, but it is worth the journey!!!

After three years, I've finally finished this book. I've restarted it three or four times. The Crucified God is an amazing theological statement about the work of the cross of Jesus Christ and is a must read for serious theologians. The only critique I have is the occasional tendency of Moltmann to be repetitive , which is only frustrating due to the depth of the text. Moltmann is an amazing theologian and I am very glad I read what some have called his greatest work in, "The Crucified God."
