Review
"DeSalle and Perkins make it easy and fun to learn about this rapidly expanding field."—Publishers Weekly"Welcome to the Microbiome gets it right—we are specks in the microbial world. We must deeply understand that fact, so we can make smarter decisions about our health."—Martin Blaser, author of Missing Microbes"Leave it to two scientists and a scientific illustrator from our unsurpassed American Museum of Natural History to deliver such a delightful addition to our growing tome of literature on the microbial communities in, on and around us. Kudos!"—Jessica Snyder Sachs, author of Good Germs, Bad Germs: Health and Survival in a Bacterial World"In Welcome to the Microbiome, DeSalle and Perkins provide nothing short of a primer to being human, a primer from the perspective of our ancient associations with microscopic species, the species that live in your teeth, ears and colon, the species that are sometimes described as being ‘on you,’ but as DeSalle and Perkins make clear, really are you. If you want to understand yourself, your flesh, your existence and struggles, what it is that you see and don't see when you stand naked in the mirror, read this book."—Rob Dunn, author of The Man Who Touched His Own Heart"Desalle and Perkins have produced a beautifully comprehensive guide to the microbes that inhabit our body and how we know about them. This book should be of tremendous interest to anyone looking to peer behind the microbiome headlines and understand what is really going on."—Rob Knight, author of Follow Your Gut: The Enormous Impact of Tiny Microbes"This is a really great read and a timely summary of a field that has just exploded. The authors do a great job of reviewing the literature in an accessible and accurate way, and the vignettes are really entertaining."—Paul J. Planet, M.D., Ph.D., Columbia University

Considering that some 7% of our biomass is composed of “external†bacteria which live on and in us, it is fascinating to read about this developing field that looks at the ecology of these life forms we co-exist with, usually in health, sometimes in illness. What emerges is a portrait of an extremely complex and dynamic system of various life forms interacting with each other and the body we are first born with. Much like the Earth’s atmosphere being a necessary partner with its geology, our bodies have their own necessary and unavoidable atmosphere, in mouth, gut, skin, etc., which is really the larger vision of what we are as biological entities. We are given quick tours of cellular biology, genetics, & evolutionary history along the way and can begin to appreciate a newly developing field, still in its infancy, in both our understanding of and practical application to human health and disease. If I didn’t give this 5 stars, it is for 2 reasons: firstly, the authors sometimes delve deep into the weeds, throwing around names and distinctions between different bacteria and cellular sub-structures that would incline some more general readers (as myself) to first read an intro to cell biology or else retrieve long forgotten information from their high school or college intro biology class. Secondly, since the authors do have an agenda of convincing the reader (& the case is easily made) of how important to the future of all health studies this new and enlarged picture of the microbiome is, they briefly mention but give only a bit of attention to other such microscopic entities in and on us, such as viruses. The microbiome seems to be essentially bacteria interacting with each other and our immune system. There are other single celled organisms we also uneasily co-exist with, whether they be amoebic, mite, or other parasites and a page or two on these additional actors would have been interesting. Still and all, this is a very worthwhile, eye-opening, even paradigm shifting book and brings into focus that, as with physics or climate studies, we are living through the mere beginnings of a “golden age†of the biological & genetic sciences. Given the disregard or even animus of some toward scientific findings these days, that realization is important and inspiring.
This book has many slightly interesting tidbits, mostly ideas I either already knew, or that didn't seem important enough to remember.
great audio book to study about the microbione in your health
A little too much detail for this science lover.
