There are not really many books on the topic of flogging and, basically, it seems to be that flogging is a staple of the BDSM community. It is because of this deficiency in the M/s, D/s or BDSM lifetsyle community that books like Mr. Bean's "Flogging" are excellent tools for those who want to explore this practice and possibly incorporate it into their lifestyle practices.The book is thin and can be digested rather quickly; the author does well to introduce the reader not only on certain techniques of flogging but on the important support aspects as well such as care for your tools, addressing needs and care for your subject, and the psychology and practice behind pre-scene, the scene itself and the aftercare after the scene.I would recommend though that if you are considering this book because you have an interest in flogging or incorporating flogging into your lifestyle practices or you just want to explore flogging as a new way of playing with your partner, you may also, at time of purchase, obtain Mr. Bean's companion video training system titled "Flogging: The Basics and Beyond (SMTech Educational)" which can also be ordered through Amazon. The DVD will provide you with the visual tools necessary to get the written instruction you obtained in his book down properly.

What do you expect from a person who is doing flogging for 3+ decades? You expect some hints, "secrets", details. Don't tell me that it's impossible to explain these things in writing. People in Russia (where BDSM is much younger as subculture!) can and I don't believe that the language of Shakespeare is poorer. But what do you find? Some general info about flogging. Finding a partner, negotiations and all the stuff that is described much better in many other books. When it comes to flogging itself, probably only 1/4 of a book is devoted to the topic. It's a pity. But 3 stars is not for this. At least nobody promised the book for an "advanced user" (though I don't think I am the one). The fact is that the book is somewhat clumsy in general. Appendix B repeats some info from the book itself and from Appendix A. The explanations are based on 4 different scenes of which only one and a half describe flogging itself, not cleaning devices by a slave or arrogant but useless Top-woman. Etc...In fact if you have some fantasies but know nothing about flogging the book will be useful. If you have at least some knowledge, don't waste your time.

Did not come with the DVD it was supposed to AGAIN. Incompetence at its best! I'll check ebay for the DVD, because there is no way I'm going for "third time's a charm". Beyond dissapointed. Description says it comes with instructional DVD. The TWO I ordered did not.

Needs a good copy-editing job. Other than that-it's a great read. Engaging, and clearly informative. A great reference of the curious, or general principle set for the frequent players and more serious practitioners. Organization could be better, but it is clear enough.

I have not read the book although it looks like it may be good. I just wanted people to know that this DOES NOT come with the DVD anymore. I would return it but it's not worth it since I do want the book. It just sucks that so many mentioned it has the dvd only to order the new expensive book hoping it would have the dvd and to not get it.

I purchased this book in hopes of finding something that will educate new comers to the world of SM; Even in today's open world of information, this book/DVD is a rare find.When I recieved the book and DVD (if it is not clear this is a Book and DVD SET) I instant put in the DVD and sat down expecting a very dry tutorial; This was so far from the reality though. J.W. Bean is definately entertaining while getting across crusial information and safety tips. There is even a bit of world history (that I cross checked for accuracy) of where some of the flogging traditions origionate from I would recomend this set to anyone who is interested in flogging no matter their experience level.The book is a quick read but is really an over view of the DVD, which is nice to have, but do not just look at one or the other. However, I strongly suggest reviewing both the book and DVD.Play Safe.

I'm not done reading it but I'm calling it a must have for anyone into BDSM, impact play, floggers, or leathercraft of that sort. It's got a lot of great advice about aspects one may not have thought to consider.

A must read for beginner to intermediate players (should also be required of those "experienced" tops and bottoms who think they know it all)! Joseph Bean reveals the art and the magic of flogging, both of which involve far more than mere technique. Read it and be elevated and inspired. Really.
