Review

"A moving story ... a family saga with a range of characters that generate a full range of emotions ... At times I was feeling sad, at times joyful, at times full of admiration ... ." Dr. Martin Hooper, Beach Shack Publications. "I have just finished reading your book. Very interesting, thank you. It covers so many years, people and families. Looking at your recipes, reminds me that I have not made cepelinai etc. for years. Sometimes I make kugelis. But I am looking forward to warmer weather and some altibar iai." Dalia Gordon, South Australia. From Jurate Grigonis, Adelaide, South Australia Circle Of Amber "Interesting story, nicely structured, beautifully told. Many of us can identify with characters and scenarios depicted. Clever weaving in of significant historical events. Very realistic descriptions of harrowing experiences. Vivid sense of tensions of war and deportations. Some very sad moments plus a couple of funny ones. Numerous cultural references, especially for foodies. Works well on physical and emotional levels, plus metaphysical. Love how she captures the different atmospheres of Lithuania and post war Australian Lithuanian community life. Family tree of the characters in the novel and a recipe sections are at the back of the book and are a terrific bonus."

Circle of Amber is an interesting read for a variety of reasons.1. Life in Lithuania under the rule of Russia is depicted very well, showing how people of lower economic means actually lived and survived in such a place.2. The village is not some romantic place with a beautiful hearth, a wood burning fireplace, but actually a rather dangerous place to live.3. The customs that were handed down for centuries and kept alive by these simple living people.4. The language was preserved by the peasant and those less economically fortunate and passed down through the generations.5. No punches are pulled as to the difficult life those living at that time endured. Alcohol, then, as now, is a curse and cause of many horrible things.6. One does not think of Lithuania when one thinks of food. Here food is one of the “main characters” of the novel.7. There are many different types of alcoholic drinks that come from Lithuania, some are really great sounding (and, I might add, good drinking) that are not found anywhere else in the world.8. There is a great last section in the book with the recipes for many of the dishes that are mentioned in the book, as well as how to make some of the alcoholic beverages.9. The dispersion of the Lithuanians after the war is well depicted with the author’s home country, Australia, being spotlighted.10. The dedication of those Lithuanians who had to leave and live in another country, to their native country, language and customs. It sometimes caused problems, but it was the way it was, and still is in many ways. All in all, a very well written book by an author who knows personally about her heritage. Thank you for this, Jura Reilly.

I first saw information about this book on Facebook in "I Love Lithuanian Food." I bought the book because I wanted the Lithuanian recipes in back. And wow, the book sure answered some questions about my life growing up in America to refugee parents. Of course, I didn't know about the lives of my grandparents, but bits and pieces of the characters were parts of bits and pieces of my parents. The characters in the book really touched my heart. I was around 4 1/2 or 5 when we came to America in the 1950s. I grew up watching Leave it to Beaver, The Donna Reed Show, Ozzie and Harriet, etc., so in my mind my family should have been like the TV families and not like they were (refugee family). We did not have relatives in America (my mom did have a very distant cousin) nor did we live near other refugee Lithuanian families. My dad was a carpenter and didn't work in the packing house (as most refugee men) and my mom worked in a hospital cafeteria not factories (as most refugee women), so most of the people my parents worked with were American. I understood quite a few of the feelings the characters were going through because I experienced them myself. Also, now I can make Lithuanian food and know how much of what to add instead of guessing all the time. And adding a little apple sauce to the kokletai (like small meatloafs fried on the stove) to keep the meat soft - wow, now that is a first for me.

A captivating story that moves through several generations of an extended family, beginning in the Lithuanian village of Ventuva in the early part of the twentieth century, and ending in Sydney, Australia, pretty close to the present day. The trials and hardships of first living under Russian occupation, then undertaking a dangerous escape from the Nazis, and finally learning to adjust to an unfamiliar environment in post-WWII Australia, are depicted in poignant detail, alongside endearing descriptions of happier experiences such as love and courtship, together with moving portrayals of heartbreak and loss. One meets a wide variety of characters along the way, yet the author manages to weave their individual stories into a coherent and exciting tale complete with episodes of suspense (Will the resistance fighters get caught? Did someone die naturally or was it murder? Will they get married? Is the spouse unfaithful?) Amazingly, for a saga that spans many generations, the beginning and end of the tale are tied together in a remarkable and surprising twist! I also loved the vivid descriptions of Lithuanian customs, such as the preparations and celebrations for feasts like Easter and Christmas, and the descriptions of the numerous culinary traditions (there is even a recipe section at the end of the book). I found it easy to read, and fascinating enough that once I finished it I went back the next day and read it all over again!

As someone originally from the Baltic states it's always wonderful to hear of a book written about our people, culture, foods, and history. Circle of Amber weaves a lovely tale of several generations, encompassing so much of our history seamlessly and easily. It's easy to read and identify with much of what the author writes. An added bonus is the recipe section at the back. Thank you for keeping our history alive Jura!

All four of my grandparents were immigrants from Lithuania, so this book had a special meaning for me. It is well-written, and gives fascinating insight into the Lithuanian life and traditions through the ages. A little love story woven in adds to the enjoyment.

Jura Reilly is an excellent story teller. I highly recommend this book!

New book - terrible writing ...saving grace was the recipes in the back.....waste of money...

Very informative, of how Lithuanians ended up in Siberia after the war.
