This book is a great story tucked into a comprehensive guide to making a dream real. I meet so many people who have "taking a year off and seeing the world" as their dream or it's on their bucket list. I love the fact that this guide can talk through every step to making it real - down to the dollar! My dream would be that every one of those people finds this book.

I just got around to opening the book and am having a hard time putting it down. I am currently prepping for a 6+ month road trip where I will quit my job next April, and this book is already helping calm some fears. This book is well written, heartfelt, interesting, honest...

The book was ok . It a few good travel points. But I wanted more about this couples travel experience than how their relationship grew over the travel year.

Great book with fun and practical advice. Even if this doesn’t ever come true for me, I love the dreaming!

"One Year Off - A Story About Traveling the World--And How To Make It Happen For You" (2018 publication; 259 pages) is a non-fiction book by Alexandra and David Brown. In the book's "Meet the Authors" pages, we learn that Alexandra and David had met only 2 months before deciding to quit their desk jobs and take a year off to travel around the world (literally). Talk about a bold move! The last sentence of this introduction gives away a lot: "And yes, when we got back, we did get married."The book is divided in three major section: Before You Go; On the Road; and Coming Back Home. Of those three, the 110 page "Before You Go" section is by far the better, and most helpful for those of us who are still dreaming of doing something similar, if we can ever muster the courage. The book is a mix of super-practical details, along with more personal reflections from the co-authors, and of course a bunch of wonderful pictures (all taken by the authors themselves). One of my major questions was how much such a venture would cost, and the authors, bless their hearts, go out of their way to provide a detailed budget for the various segments of the trip. And how much was their grand total? You'll just have to read the book!At the time of this book's publication last Fall, it had been 2 1/2 years since the authors concluded their trip around the world. In the Epilogue they share some of the bigger picture conclusions, including that "there is a big reason we wanted to write this book. Travel awakened a part of ourselves that helps us remain engaged in our lives. The trip also really reinforced in us the belief that there is no sustainable option to be anything or anybody other than yourself. In this way, it has yet to end; rather, taking a year off was just the beginning." This book is truly inspirational to all of us who secretly wish we could do what this couple has done (and we can still dream that we will). Bottom line: "One Year Off" is a WINNER.
