Every edition of MCO is a useful reference book. However, none of them will give a chess player a good understanding of any chess opening. Using this alone (without a database of chess games) will get you killed in correspondence chess games.
This is a great reference for chess buffs. I also have the 14th edition of this book, Serious chess players should get either one of these references.
An old classic, updated and a useful reference book to supplement your digital studies
The review by Gina Kruml is right on. I had waited for years for the new edition....what a disappointment. The number of typographical errors is staggering. It's hard to find an opening free of typos. In a chessbook, this is particularly bad and I tend to fault De Firmian, the author. Doesn't he have any responsibility to read his own work? Kruml blames the editors, but I think Kruml is too kind. The book also does a poor job on providing the names of the more obscure openings. Although they may be covered, no names are attached and they are not indexed. How does this help the chess student? Blame the editors, but it seems as if De Firmian detached himself from any supervision. As for the number of he/she's puffing up the text (and slowing down the reader), well Kruml did nicely mention the environmental impact. This must be the fault of the knee-jerk editors.Of course any decent chessplayer has to buy this book...it's a classic. But it's so sad to see chess computers getting better and MCO editions getting worse.
A classic every chess enthusiast should have.

I just want to point out a mistake on page 145, in the latvian gambit. The book gives the line 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 f5 3.Bc4 fxe4 4.Nxe5 Qg5 5.d4 Qxg2 6.Qh5+ g6 7.Bf7+ Kd8 8.Bxg6 Qxh1+ 9.Ke2 Qxc1 10.Nf7+ Ke7 and in this position the book says "and now both 11.Nxh8 and 11.Nd2 are promising for white but not entirely clear (Kosten)" The book completely overlooks that 11.Qe5+ is checkmate!!!I've spent a lot of money in this book and it is very discouraging to find a mistake like this.
