I have been through a few of the areas covered in this book and the photos alone are motivating the family for another trip! While focused on the river related aspects of the canyons, details in here will help me fill days on and off the water, or as some of the multisport combinations suggest, both. This guide takes a broader look at the canyons valleys of Powell's epic route and blends historic context with humorous moments from the authors own retracing of it. There are useful lookup tables to help you decide which sections meet your time and skill level, then enough detail to get you started, going in the right direction, and appreciating modern equipment.
Mike Bezemek successfully combines his obvious passion for river running, his respect and love for the environment, his knowledge of geology, and his dedication to the Powell route pilgrimage and related history in this humorous and well-written guide. I can’t wait to plan my next adventure on the Powell Route!
Thoroughly researched, and well written by the author. The photos are vibrant, and stunngly capture the beauty of the landscape. A must have for any adventures library.
I have long planned/dreamed for/of the day when I chase less challenging rivers and take a look at some of the long multi day trips along the Green and Colorado Rivers and their tributaries like the Yampa and Escalante Rivers. This book was a nice introduction into the region, specifically the Green and Colorado Rivers, tracing the trail of the Powell expedition of 1869. The book provides a nice overview of the modern sections and logistics you would need to experience them today, along with snippets of the historical expedition through the same sections. And throughout, is some clever wit and humor. So yea, just thought I would share... in case anyone else is dreaming of exploring the area or just looking for a river book to read.Plus, we share an almamater. So, yea. Go Aggies!
For canoers and explorers and adventurers and river enthusiasts, this book has lots and lots of practical information for multi-day trips on the Colorado and Green Rivers as well as through the Grand Canyon--trips I, as an indoor person, lover of the couch, hot water, a soft bed, and room service will never take. The physical descriptions, though, and the historical information about John Wesley Powell and his two trips--their difficulties, failures, and successes--make this an engaging and fascinating read. Oh, and the photos are gorgeous.... Take the trips with Mike by canoe or couch. Either way, it's worth the read.
As a beginner kayaker I had a chance to take a three week NOLS course on the Gates of Lodore section of the Green River in CO that changed the way I thought about rivers in the West. Since then I've been searching for the tools to make more adventures like this a reality. This guidebook is not only detailed, concise and gives the incredible history of the area, but it's full of personal insight and motivation that lets the reader feel the flow and need for rivers and recreation like this. One of the true adventures in the American West, and I can't recommend a better partner to do it with then this book.
This guide book gives great insight into traveling this historic route. It provides excellent advice on how to float many amazing sections of wilderness as well as great advice in deciding which sections to float based on your interests and ability levels. The author provides a unique insight into the first documented trip through this part of the country.
