This is by far the very best historical accounting of the Linebacker operations. This is a very interesting book and hard to put down once started. The outstanding personal commentary of the actual participants really make this book stand out. The author's analysis of the lessons learned is spot on, and many were implemented in Desert Storm with tremendous success.

The several spelling errors in this book are overshadowed by the immaculate detail. I was an F-4 crew chief at Udorn during Linebacker II and of course, at the time, simply had no idea of the real intensity, especially involving the B-52s, of what was going on north of me.. Mercy, most people simply have no clue of what really went on during this heavy bombing campaign. Wow. A real eye opener. This should be taught and summarized in our schools. A very good book.

This is an excellent book about the brief B52 bombing campaign against the Hanoi-Haiphong area that forced North Vietnam back to the peace talks. The campaign is described day by day, and includes not just the B52 flights, but also the many USAF and USN support strikes and activities. There are also many details about the strategy and tactics of the campaign, and about the evolution of the tactics after the losses sustained in the first few days. Although not an official history, Linebacker could well be one, but it is perhaps too critical for that. The style is somewhat flat, and its content requires at least some prior knowledge of the USAF of the Vietnam War.The 1972 campaign led to an agreement that allowed the USA to withdraw from the Vietnam War with some dignity, while giving South Vietnam a chance to survive as an independent nation. It did not turn out that way, because North Vietnam broke the agreement, invaded South Vietnam which was then abandoned (and betrayed) by the USA. This was more than unfortunate, especially since the Linebacker demonstrated North Vietnam's vulnerability to US air power, and the ability of the USAF and the USN to apply it when free of the restrictions that plagued them until Linebacker.I gave this book four stars, but only from the perspective of a general reader; for specialists this is at least a 4.5

This is a good account and a very techinal written account of how the interdiction was used and what lessons were learned while it unfolded. I shows the short comings in the military for not wanting to grant control to any one group and just have the needs and options of each voiced so that all sectors were properly utilized for a greater outcome. Lastly it shows what really happens when you fall in the hands of the enemy. Torture was real and it started as soon as you were taken captive. Not just the physical torture which was brutal, but the mental tear down and abuse. You can almost feel what some of our men went through. Almost. As I have said before I did not have the privilege of serving so I cannot salute you, but I will stand at attention, silent and show you the respect that you have earned. Thank you for your service. I was in grade school when Operation Linebacker was initiated by President Nixon to force North Vietnam to the negotiating table.This was a great, eye opening, and very complete technical account of the air war over North Vietnam. The author fills you in on more of the tactics and mistakes in tactics that the US employed. I enjoyed the personal accounts of the pilots that flew the missions and the tremendous peril that they endured. It also opened my eyes to the immense logistical effort involved in putting together "strike Packages" that included hundreds of supporting aircraft and helicopters.A highly recommended read.

Initially, I struggled through Linebacker, due to the preponderance of technical information which I didn't understand. Once the author, Karl Eschmann, began discussing the Linebacker II campaign, it took on more meaning and a considerable amount of personal perspective as he shared narratives from the flight crew members from the B-52s that were shot down. I was also very impressed with the honesty the author demonstrated in his assessment of the entire Linebacker II campaign. Additionally, the narrative from Capt. Frank Lewis who described his experience as a POW was quite enlightening.

Very few histories of the Linebacker raids have been written, but between this one and "The Eleven Days of Christmas" the subject is well covered. Eschmann goes into detail on the planning, tactics, and concepts of the Linebacker I and II raids, and has produced a very readable and accurate account.

Not your typical war book...this is mostly facts and numbers. This is a history of the bombing of North Vietnam.
